Charity

a different way

“Birchwood is a charity tackling homelessness, mental health issues and wellbeing head-on. We create positive change in communities through interconnected homelessness and housing support, mental health support, counselling and wellbeing activities.

Society, and the systems that are supposed to support us, are struggling. We see those struggles every day in our West Lancashire community, people falling through the gaps and places where existing solutions fall short.

There’s a need for a different way.

At Birchwood we’re not happy to sit back and wait for people to come to us, we’re proactively tackling issues in our community, whether that’s a homeless 16-year-old who needs accommodation, a mum struggling with anxiety who needs counselling or someone who’s had a tough path and needs help, advice, and wellbeing activities to show them life can change. A different way opens doors to possibilities, giving people the time and energy they deserve to feel heard and understood. Whether it’s the smallest step of helping someone fill in a form to the giant steps of rewriting someone’s life story, we’re fighting for a fairer world for everyone.

Charity, a different way.”

Why we exist

We’re fighting for a world where everyone has a roof over their head, a chance to thrive free from poverty, abuse, injustice, and mental health struggles, and access to the support they need. We believe in the power of understanding and support to empower everyone and their communities to build a different future.

How we do things

Our values underpin everything we do, from how we speak to you to the services we offer.

Compassion

We actively understand and acknowledge people’s situations and take action to help them make changes.

Trust

We believe in working together to make change, creating safe spaces for people who need our help, our community and our staff.

Commitment

We don’t give up. Ever. If we can’t find the right help we’ll find the person who can. We believe society can be better and we’re making those changes everyday.

Safety

We work hard to make everyone feel safe, including our staff. It’s more than following the rules, instead being proactive and identifying problems and needs and acting to resolve them.
